Accumulation delved into themes of repetition and buildup through the lens of my personal experience managing type 1 diabetes. Created two years after my diagnosis, I became acutely aware of the growing volume of medical waste generated by my daily routine. With four injections and numerous blood tests required each day, the relentless cycle led to an overwhelming accumulation of physical remnants.
In this triptych, I intentionally juxtapose these medical by-products with everyday debris-rolled-up dryer lint and a wooden post pierced with staples. The test strips in the medical waste visually echo the pattern of the staples in the wood post, while the staples themselves also reference the insulin needles used in my treatment. Each element symbolizes repeated actions, the residue they leave behind, and the transformation of materials from one state to another. Together, they reflect the ongoing passage of time and the tangible imprint of living with a chronic condition.
